ABOUT WSO

OUR MISSION

The Westerville Symphony at Otterbein University presents inspiring symphonic performances and educational experiences that bring people together, spark curiosity, and celebrate the power of live music. Through concerts, outreach, and community partnerships, we create meaningful opportunities for families, students, and neighbors to experience orchestral music in their own community.

Our Story

The Symphony traces its roots to the Otterbein Orchestra, a student-led ensemble formed within Otterbein University’s Department of Music. While string ensembles have existed at the university since the 19th century, the modern chapter began in 1964 with a 20-member group led by a music faculty member.

Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, the ensemble evolved into a hybrid of student and community musicians. With growing local interest, the orchestra expanded its performances to include full concert programs and annual collaborations with Otterbein’s Theatre Department for opera and musical productions.

A pivotal moment came in 1980 when a League of American Orchestras consultant, engaged with support from the Ohio Arts Council, recommended transforming the ensemble into a true community arts organization. In 1983, the group was formally incorporated as the Westerville Civic Symphony at Otterbein College.
